1943 History of the Choir 2009

The Wolverhampton Orpheus Male Voice Choir was founded in 1943 by Frank Weaver and a number of experienced singers from Wolverhampton Male Voice Choir.

In 1993. the Golden Jubilee celebrations were held in the Wolverhampton Civic Hall attended by the Mayor and other Civic dignitaries. The Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2003 was again a wonderful occasion culminating in a Gala Concert in Beckminster Church, Wolverhampton attended by the Deputy Mayor and Mayors and the son of the founder Frank Weaver, also the son of an early Musical Director Bernard Kind.

The highlights of 63 years of singing, competitive and otherwise are obviously numerous but mention must be made that throughout its history, the Choir has been held in extremely high regard by the City`s Civic `Father's`who were pleased to grant the hon our to wear the City`s Crest on the Choirs rehearsal uniforms. Newspaper and many Music Journals have likewise applauded the Choir`s activities and it has been said that the W.O.M.V.C. is one of the City`s assets.

The Choir has entertained audiences not only throughout the U.K.but also during overseas tours in Germany, to the Island of Corfu and it played a major part in the formation of the Atlantic Singers, singing aboard the famous QE2 in 1995/1996. On shore from the QE2,the Choir sang in St.Patrick`s Cathedral New York and in St Anthony`s Cathedral Lisbon. In 1997 it was the chosen choir to sing in St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh.-``St Giles at Six``during The Tattoo celebrations. A further hon our in 2004 was to sing in the famous Lincoln Cathedral to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of D.Day (6th June 1944). .
